You’re invited to LGA’s inaugural Gas Training & Educational Center (GASTEC) Intensive Training Week! This FREE programming is offered to anyone working in the natural gas industry. Here’s what to expect:

Small Operator Pipeline Safety Seminar & Roundtable
Tour of new GASTEC facility

This seminar will consist of the following topics: 
  - Filing OR-1s and Annual Report
  - DIMP
  - D&A Plans
  - MAOP Review
  - Damage Prevention Program
  - End User Rights
  -  Small Operator Guidelines (O&M and OQ)
  TUESDAY, MARCH 19, 2019
8:00 - 9:30 am Introduction to Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Regulations & Compliance for First Responders
Facilitators: Steven Giambrone, LDNR Office of Conservation & Pipeline Safety Employees
9:30 - 4:30 pm Natural Gas Basics 101 & 102
Facilitators: Magnolia River Training Specialists
These classes include the basic principals of natural gas and how to be safe when working in a natural gas environment. This will also include a natural gas demo by Kinder Morgan on the explanation of the chemical make-up of natural gas & propane and how they burn. Will also touch on basic cathodic protection of pipelines and regulating devices.
9:00 am - 4:00 pm Locating & Managing Natural Gas Leaks
Facilitators: Sean Epps of Heath Consultants
Actions to be taken when a gas line is leaking (inside or outside a house or business). As a first responder arriving on the scene of a gas fire or blowing gas, the first 5 minutes can make the difference between life or death for a customer. Knowing what to do and what not to do to make the scene safe could mean the difference between saving lives or a fatality. Basic knowledge of abnormal operating conditions (AOCs), what to look for and what to do when an unsafe situation occurs. Effectively and safely managing gas leak emergencies for all stakeholders. This includes squeezing off a line, static electricity, and when to let the gas burn off. 
  THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 2019
9:00 am - 4:00 pm Gas Metering - From Meter to Burner Tip (Customer-side of Meter)
Facilitators: Gas Training Specialists
Covers the steps taken from the meter to the burner tip. Lighting appliances. Safety check & meter testing. Covers different metering sizes, including residential and commercial applications. 
  FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 2019
9:00 - 11:00 am Mock Gas Line Strike Demo
Facilitators: Kevin Crafton or Enertech & Diana Wilcox of Entergy
Live demo of a pipeline strike/damage and how to effectively and safely get the situation under control. With a focus on the outcome of what happens when you call 811 to request a locate and what can happen if you do not call 811 to get the underground utility lines in the area located/marked. 
11:00 am Program Ends - Closing Remarks

GASTEC is the LGA's Gas Training & Educational Center (GASTEC), which is located at the JESTC property in Zachary. JESTC (Joint Emergency Services Training Center) is managed by the State Police and offers courses throughout the year for various safety training. Find out more about JESTC by clicking here.
